Ameresco Partners with U.S. General Services Administration for Federal ESPC in Arizona, California and Nevada

Deep energy retrofit to address twelve federal buildings in five U.S. cities

FRAMINGHAM, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Ameresco, Inc. (NYSE: AMRC), a leading energy efficiency and renewable energy company, announced today the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) has entered into an Energy Savings Performance Contract (ESPC) with Ameresco for solar photovoltaic (PV), water conservation and energy efficiency upgrades to 12 federal buildings across three Western states. The contract, valued at $24.7 million, is designed to provide facility-wide energy conservation measures to a number of federal buildings and U.S. Courthouses located in Arizona, California, and Nevada.

“Ameresco is excited to serve the GSA in providing holistic energy upgrades that will enhance the day-to-day operations of these federal buildings while supporting their sustainability goals,” said Nicole A. Bulgarino, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Federal Solutions, Ameresco. “This deep energy retrofit demonstrates the effectiveness of maximizing energy efficiencies across a large multi-state building portfolio. We commend the GSA for their collaborative approach towards energy efficiency.”

The budget-neutral ESPC will implement 37 energy conservation measures across 3.7 million square feet of GSA-owned buildings in five U.S. cities, including Las Vegas, Phoenix, Reno, San Diego and Tucson. Combined, the measures will reduce the total energy consumption of the federal buildings by 30 percent. The ESPC will also provide for water conservation and fixture upgrades to reduce domestic water usage.

More than 30,000 new high efficiency light fixtures with dimmable controls will be installed under the project. In San Diego, the buildings will also be modernized with the installation of an advanced front-end lighting controls system which utilizes state-of-the-art Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) to allow for dimming-control and occupancy factor adjustments.

The ESPC will provide for comprehensive and innovative building envelope measures, such as the installation of new double pane windows, the installation of a revolving entry door and an architectural glass wall around a jury assembly room to reduce air changes in the space and improve juror comfort. New chillers will also be installed in several buildings, as well as high-efficiency transformers and cutting edge open-protocol building automation and control systems for HVAC equipment across each building.

To support distributed generation, 462 kilowatts of solar photovoltaic systems on carports and rooftops will be installed at the Edward J. Schwartz Federal Building and U.S. Courthouse in San Diego. Ameresco has also designed a follow-on battery storage system to be employed in conjunction with the on-site solar for energy demand-reduction and peak savings.

Construction on the project is expected to begin this summer and is scheduled to be completed in early 2018. All buildings will continue to be fully occupied during the construction period. As a result of the ESPC, greenhouse gas emissions are expected to be reduced by 6,828 metric tons annually.

This federal energy efficiency project will support GSA’s commitment to the Presidential Performance Contracting Challenge, as well as Executive Order 13693, Planning for Federal Sustainability in the Next Decade.

The following buildings will be addressed by the project:

  • Federal Building and U.S. Courthouse, Phoenix, AZ
  • Sandra Day O'Connor Federal Building and U.S. Courthouse, Phoenix, AZ
